Aspetto generale

Osservato da fermo ed in atteggiamento naturale il Collie appare come un cane agile, forte, reattivo, vivace, nel quale nessuna parte risulta essere fuori misura. Il torace, profondo e moderatamente ampio, esprime forza, le spalle angolate ed i garretti ben inclinati esprimono velocità e grazia, e la sua espressione rivela grande intelligenza. Il Collie rappresenta una straordinaria e fiera manifestazione di autentico equilibrio, con ogni parte del corpo armoniosamente proporzionata ad ogni altra parte ed all’insieme. Al di là della descrizione tecnica, che è essenziale per questo standard e senza la quale nessuno standard può rappresentare una guida adeguata per allevatori e giudici, si potrebbe semplicemente affermare che nessuna parte del collie deve risultare disarmonica rispetto alle altre. Timidezza, fragilità di carattere, scontrosità, cattiveria, mancanza di vivacità, aspetto goffo e soprattutto la mancanza di equilibrio rovinano l’aspetto generale.

General Character

The Collie is a lithe, strong, responsive, active dog, carrying no useless timber, standing naturally straight and firm. The deep, moderately wide chest shows strength, the sloping shoulders and well-bent hocks indicate speed and grace, and the face shows high intelligence. The Collie presents an impressive, proud picture of true balance, each part being in harmonious proportion to every other part and to the whole. Except for the technical description that is essential to this Standard and without which no Standard for the guidance of breeders and judges is adequate, it could be stated simply that no part of the Collie ever seems to be out of proportion to any other part. Timidity, frailness, sullenness, viciousness, lack of animation, cumbersome appearance and lack of over-all balance impair the general character.

Testa

Le qualità della testa sono di grande importanza. Se valutiamo la testa in proporzione alla taglia del cane, essa tende alla leggerezza e non deve mai apparire pesante. Un cane dalla testa grossa manca del necessario sguardo brillante, vigile, pieno di significato, che tanto contribuisce all’espressione. Vista di fronte, come di profilo, la testa mostra una sommaria somiglianza con un cuneo ben smussato e sottile, liscio, dal profilo levigato e pulito, ben bilanciato nelle varie parti. In senso laterale essa si assottiglia gradualmente e uniformemente dalle orecchie fino alla punta del tartufo nero, senza essere troppo profonda in corrispondenza del cranio o troppo stretta in corrispondenza del muso. Viste di profilo le linee superiori del cranio e del muso devono trovarsi su due piani diritti, approssimativamente paralleli, di uguale lunghezza, separati da uno stop molto leggero, ma percettibile. Il punto di mezzo tra gli angoli interni degli occhi (che è il centro di un stop correttamente piazzato) è il centro di equilibrio della testa in senso longitudinale.

La punta del muso, dal pelo corto, é ben arrotondata e smussata, ma non squadrata. La mandibola è forte, regolare e la profondità del cranio, dal sopracciglio alla parte inferiore della mascella, non deve essere eccessiva. I denti sono di buona misura, e si toccano con una chiusura a forbice. Enognatismo e prognatismo sono indesiderabili, essendo il secondo penalizzato più severamente del primo. Si nota una prominenza molto leggera del sopracciglio. Il cranio è piatto, senza essere inclinato né lateralmente, né all’indietro e l'osso occipitale non deve essere sporgente. L'ampiezza corretta del cranio dipende necessariamente dalla lunghezza combinata del cranio e del muso e tale ampiezza è inferiore alla sua lunghezza. Così l'ampiezza corretta varia da individuo a individuo e dipende dalle dimensioni del muso. A causa dell'importanza delle qualità della testa, i suoi difetti gravi vengono penalizzati molto severamente.

Head

The head properties are of great importance. When considered in proportion to the size of the dog the head is inclined to lightness and never appears massive. A heavy-headed dog lacks the necessary bright, alert, full-of-sense look that contributes so greatly to expression. Both in front and profile view the head bears a general resemblance to a well-blunted lean wedge, being smooth and clean in outline and nicely balanced in proportion. On the sides it tapers gradually and smoothly from the ears to the end of the black nose, without being flared out in backskull (cheeky) or pinched in muzzle (snipy). In profile view the top of the backskull and the top of the muzzle lie in two approximately parallel, straight planes of equal length, divided by a very slight but perceptible stop or break. A mid-point between the inside corners of the eyes (which is the center of a correctly placed stop) is the center of balance in length of head.

The end of the smooth, well-rounded muzzle is blunt but not square. The underjaw is strong, clean-cut and the depth of skull from the brow to the under part of the jaw is not excessive. The teeth are of good size, meeting in a scissors bite. Overshot or undershot jaws are undesirable, the latter being more severely penalized. There is a very slight prominence of the eyebrows. The backskull is flat, without receding either laterally or backward and the occipital bone is not highly peaked. The proper width of backskull necessarily depends upon the combined length of skull and muzzle and the width of the backskull is less than its length. Thus the correct width varies with the individual and is dependent upon the extent to which it is supported by length of muzzle. Because of the importance of the head characteristics, prominent head faults are very severely penalized.

Occhi

A causa della combinazione del cranio piatto, delle sopracciglia arcuate, del leggero stop e del muso arrotondato, la canna nasale deve essere cesellata in modo da formare quasi un ricettacolo per gli occhi che, quindi, devono necessariamente essere disposti obliquamente, affinché possano avere la richiesta visione in avanti. Eccetto che nei blu merle, essi devono essere dello stesso colore, hanno forma a mandorla, dimensioni medie e non devono mai apparire troppo grandi o prominenti. Il colore è scuro e l'occhio non deve avere un contorno giallo o essere abbastanza sporgente da rovinare l'espressione del cane. Gli occhi hanno un aspetto limpido, brillante, esprimono l'intelligente curiosità propria del collie, particolarmente quando anche gli orecchi sono portati in posizione eretta ed il cane è in attenzione. Nei blu merle gli occhi sono preferibilmente marrone scuro, ma uno o entrambi possono essere di colore merle o porcellana senza subire penalizzazioni. Un occhio grande, rotondo, pieno rovina seriamente l’espressione dolce desiderata. I difetti dell’occhio vengono fortemente penalizzati.

Eyes

Because of the combination of the flat skull, the arched eyebrows, the slight stop and the rounded muzzle, the foreface must be chiseled to form a receptacle for the eyes and they are necessarily placed obliquely to give them the required forward outlook. Except for the blue merles, they are required to be matched in color. They are almond-shaped, of medium size and never properly appear to be large or prominent. The color is dark and the eye does not show a yellow ring or a sufficiently prominent haw to affect the dog's expression. The eyes have a clear, bright appearance, expressing intelligent inquisitiveness, particularly when the ears are drawn up and the dog is on the alert. In blue merles, dark brown eyes are preferable, but either or both eyes may be merle or china in color without specific penalty. A large, round, full eye seriously detracts from the desired sweet expression. Eye faults are heavily penalized.

Orecchie

Le orecchie sono proporzionate alle dimensioni della testa e, se sono portate in maniera corretta e piegate in modo naturale, raramente sono troppo piccole. Le orecchie grandi di solito non possono essere portate in maniera corretta sopra la testa e, anche se sono ben portate, risulteranno sproporzionate alla misura della testa. In posizione di riposo le orecchie sono ripiegate longitudinalmente e gettate indietro sul collare. In attenzione sono ben piazzate sulla testa e portate per tre quarti erette e per un quarto ripiegate in avanti. Un cane con le orecchie a punta o con orecchie basse non può mostrare l’autentica espressione del collie e deve essere penalizzato in conseguenza.

Ears

The ears are in proportion to the size of the head and, if they are carried properly and unquestionably break naturally, are seldom too small. Large ears usually cannot be lifted correctly off the head, and even if lifted, they will be out of proportion to the size of the head. When in repose the ears are folded lengthwise and thrown back into the frill. On the alert they are drawn well up on the backskull and are carried about three-quarters erect, with about one-fourth of the ear tipping or breaking forward. A dog with prick ears or low ears cannot show true expression and is penalized accordingly.

Collo

Il collo è solido, pulito, muscoloso, robusto e ben fornito di pelo. E' abbastanza lungo, portato in posizione verticale, con una leggera arcuatura sulla nuca e conferisce al cane un aspetto fiero, facendone risaltare il collare.

Neck

The neck is firm, clean, muscular, sinewy and heavily frilled. It is fairly long, carried upright with a slight arch at the nape and imparts a proud, upstanding appearance showing off the frill.

Corpo

Il corpo è solido, forte e muscoloso, appena un po’ più lungo rispetto all'altezza. Le costole sono bene arrotondate dietro a spalle ben angolate, il torace è profondo e si estende fino ai gomiti. La schiena è forte e orizzontale, sostenuta da anche e cosce potenti; la groppa è inclinata e ben arrotondata. Il lombo è potente e leggermente arcuato. Evidentemente cani grassi, o cani poveri in carne, o con qualche malattia della pelle, o senza pelo, sono fuori condizione e di conseguenza devono essere moderatamente penalizzati.

 Body

The body is firm, hard and muscular, a trifle long in proportion to the height. The ribs are well-rounded behind the well-sloped shoulders and the chest is deep, extending to the elbows. The back is strong and level, supported by powerful hips and thighs and the croup is sloped to give a well-rounded finish. The loin is powerful and slightly arched. Noticeably fat dogs, or dogs in poor flesh, or with skin disease, or with no undercoat are out of condition and are moderately penalized accordingly.

Gambe

Gli arti anteriori sono diritti e muscolosi, con l'ossatura giusta in relazione alla taglia del cane. Un aspetto goffo è indesiderabile. Sia una costruzione stretta, che una larga sono penalizzate. L'avambraccio è moderatamente carnoso e i pastorali sono flessibili senza essere deboli. Gli arti posteriori sono meno carnosi, muscolosi alle cosce e molto forti, ed i garretti e la grassella sono ben arrotondati. Un cane dal posteriore vaccino o un cane con la grassella rettilinea è penalizzato. I piedi relativamente piccoli, sono approssimativamente di forma ovale. Le suola sono ben imbottite e dure, e le dita del piede sono ben arcuate e chiuse insieme. Quando il Collie non è in movimento le gambe ed i piedi sono giudicati con il cane fermo in modo naturale, in posizione eretta, così che gli arti anteriori e posteriori, siano piazzati ben staccati, coi piedi che si distendono dritti in avanti. Un atteggiamento smodato é indesiderabile.

 Legs

The forelegs are straight and muscular, with a fair amount of bone considering the size of the dog. A cumbersome appearance is undesirable. Both narrow and wide placement are penalized. The forearm is moderately fleshy and the pasterns are flexible but without weakness. The hind legs are less fleshy, muscular at the thighs, very sinewy and the hocks and stifles are well bent. A cowhocked dog or a dog with straight stifles is penalized. The comparatively small feet are approximately oval in shape. The soles are well padded and tough, and the toes are well arched and close together. When the Collie is not in motion the legs and feet are judged by allowing the dog to come to a natural stop in a standing position so that both the forelegs and the hind legs are placed well apart, with the feet extending straight forward. Excessive "posing"is undesirable.

Movimento

Il movimento é efficiente. Quando il cane si muove a trotto lento verso l’osservatore, le sue gambe anteriori, diritte, si muovono relativamente vicine verso terra. Esse non devono essere sporgenti ai gomiti, non devono incrociare ed il  cane non deve muovere con passo corto, dondolante o rullante. Visto da dietro, le gambe posteriori sono diritte, e si muovono sul terreno relativamente vicine. Ad un trotto moderato le gambe posteriori sono potenti e dotate di spinta. Visto di lato il passo, ragionevolmente lungo e disteso,  è uniforme e regolare, mentre la linea dorsale rimane ferma ed orizzontale. All'aumentare della velocità, il Collie porta le gambe anteriori verso l’interno, in direzione di una linea diritta che va dalla spalla verso il piano longitudinale del corpo e le gambe posteriori all’interno verso una linea diritta che va dall'anca al piano longitudinale del corpo. Il movimento esprime velocità senza sforzo, rivelando così quel patrimonio di cane da pastore, che richiede la capacità di cambiare quasi istantaneamente direzione di marcia.

 Gait

Gait is sound. When the dog is moved at a slow trot toward an observer its straight front legs track comparatively close together at the ground. The front legs are not out at the elbows, do not "crossover," nor does the dog move with a choppy, pacing or rolling gait. When viewed from the rear the hind legs are straight, tracking comparatively close together at the ground. At a moderate trot the hind legs are powerful and propelling. Viewed from the side the reasonably long, "reaching" stride is smooth and even, keeping the back line firm and level.

As the speed of the gait is increased the Collie single tracks, bringing the front legs inward in a straight line from the shoulder toward the center line of the body and the hind legs inward in a straight line from the hip toward the center line of the body. The gait suggests effortless speed combined with the dog's herding heritage, requiring it to be capable of changing its direction of travel almost instantaneously.

Coda

La coda è moderatamente lunga, il suo osso terminale deve raggiungere almeno l’articolazione del garretto. E' portata bassa quando il cane è tranquillo, con la punta leggermente rivolta verso l’alto. Quando il cane si muove o quando è eccitato, essa è portata allegramente, ma non deve mai superare la linea dorsale.

Tail

The tail is moderately long, the bone reaching to the hock joint or below. It is carried low when the dog is quiet, the end having an upward twist or swirl. When gaited or when the dog is excited it is carried gaily but not over the back.

Mantello

Il mantello, ben aderente e della giusta tessitura, è l’esaltazione della varietà a pelo lungo del Collie. E' abbondante, tranne che su testa e zampe. Il pelo esterno è liscio e ruvido al tatto. Un pelo di copertura morbido, rado o arricciato, indipendentemente dalla sua quantità, è penalizzato. Il sottopelo, nondimeno, è morbido come una pelliccia e così fitto che è difficile vedere la pelle. Il pelo è molto abbondante sulla criniera e sul collare. Sulla faccia e sul muso il pelo è corto. Le zampe anteriori sono lisce e ben fornite di pelo dietro i metacarpi. Le zampe posteriori sono lisce sotto le articolazioni del garretto. Ogni abbondanza di pelo al di sotto del garretto viene rimosso per il ring delle esposizioni. Il pelo sulla coda è molto abbondante e sui fianchi è lungo e folto. La tessitura, la quantità e la maniera con cui il mantello "si adatta al cane" sono punti molto importanti.

 Coat

The well-fitting, proper-textured coat is the crowning glory of the rough variety of Collie. It is abundant except on the head and legs. The outer coat is straight and harsh to the touch. A soft, open outer coat or a curly outer coat, regardless of quantity is penalized. The undercoat, however, is soft, furry and so close together that it is difficult to see the skin when the hair is parted. The coat is very abundant on the mane and frill. The face or mask is smooth. The forelegs are smooth and well feathered to the back of the pasterns. The hind legs are smooth below the hock joints. Any feathering below the hocks is removed for the show ring. The hair on the tail is very profuse and on the hips it is long and bushy. The texture, quantity and the extent to which the coat "fits the dog" are important points.

Colore

I quattro colori riconosciuti sono "Sabbia e Bianco", "Tricolore", “Blue Merle" e "Bianco". Non vi è alcuna preferenza tra loro. Il "Sabbia e Bianco" è prevalentemente color sabbia (un colore fulvo zibellino di diverse sfumature, da oro chiaro al mogano scuro) con le solite marcature bianche su petto, collo, gambe, piedi e punta della coda. E’ ammessa una macchia bianca sulla canna nasale o sul cranio o su entrambi. Il "Tricolore" è prevalentemente nero, con le solite macchie bianche, come nel "Sabbia e bianco", con focature sulla testa e sulle gambe. Il "Blu Merle" è un colore screziato o "marmorizzato" prevalentemente blu-grigio e nero con le macchie bianche come nel "Sabbia e bianco" e di solito presenta focature come nel "tricolore". Il "bianco" è prevalentemente bianco, preferibilmente con marcature zibellino, tricolore o blu merle.

 Color

The four recognized colors are "Sable and White," "Tri-color," "Blue Merle" and "White." There is no preference among them. The "Sable and White" is predominantly sable (a fawn sable color of varying shades from light gold to dark mahogany) with white markings usually on the chest, neck, legs, feet and the tip of the tail. A blaze may appear on the foreface or backskull or both. The "Tri-color" is predominantly black, carrying white markings as in a "Sable and White" and has tan shadings on and about the head and legs. The "Blue Merle" is a mottled or "marbled" color predominantly blue-grey and black with white markings as in the "Sable and White" and usually has tan shadings as in the "Tri-color." The "White" is predominantly white, preferably with sable, tri-color or blue merle markings.

Taglia

I maschi misurano da 24 a 26 pollici al garrese e pesano da 60 a 75 libbre. Le femmine sono invece alte da 22 a 24 pollici al garrese, e pesano da 50 a 65 libbre. Una differenza in più o in meno è penalizzata in proporzione al suo grado.

Size

Dogs are from 24 to 26 inches at the shoulder and weigh from 60 to 75 pounds. Bitches are from 22 to 24 inches at the shoulder, weighing from 50 to 65 pounds. An undersize or an oversize Collie is penalized according to the extent to which the dog appears to be undersize or oversize.

Espressione

L’espressione è uno dei punti più importanti nella valutazione dei pregi relativi del Collie. Il termine "espressione", così come il termine "carattere", é difficile da definire a parole. Non costituisce un punto fisso come il colore, il peso o l’altezza, ed é qualcosa che il novizio può comprendere bene solo con l’aiuto di un’immagine visiva. In generale, tuttavia, si può dire che essa è data dalla combinazione della forma e dell’equilibrio del cranio e del muso, dalla disposizione, dimensione, forma e colore degli occhi e dalla posizione, dimensione e portamento delle orecchie. Un'espressione che esprime nervosismo o che richiama alla mente qualche altra razza è completamente estranea al Collie. Il Collie non può essere giudicato correttamente fino a quando non sia stata valutata accuratamente la sua espressione.

 Expression

Expression is one of the most important points in considering the relative value of Collies. Expression, like the term character is difficult to define in words. It is not a fixed point as in color, weight or height and it is something the uninitiated can properly understand only by optical illustration. In general, however, it may be said to be the combined product of the shape and balance of the skull and muzzle, the placement, size, shape and color of the eye and the position, size and carriage of the ears. An expression that shows sullenness or which is suggestive of any other breed is entirely foreign. The Collie cannot be judged properly until its expression has been carefully evaluated.

SMOOTH

La varietà a pelo corto viene giudicata con lo stesso standard della varietà a pelo lungo, eccetto che per i riferimenti alla quantità ed alla distribuzione del pelo, che non sono applicabili alla varietà a pelo corto che ha un mantello corto, duro, denso, liscio, di buona tessitura, con un'abbondante sottopelo.

 Smooth

The Smooth Variety of Collie is judged by the same Standard as the Rough Variety, except that the references to the quantity and distribution of the coat are not applicable to the Smooth Variety, which has a short, hard, dense, flat coat of good texture, with an abundance of undercoat.
